Wearing a Mask for the Glory of Christ
Wearing a Mask for the Glory of Christ
I am (like many of you, I think) to the point of just closing my eyes and shaking my head at all of the events of this year. The latest ordinance now for Springfieldians is the mandate to wear a face covering in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
To be honest, my initial, fleshly reaction to this mandate is one of suspicion, doubt in its effectiveness, and just general rebellion. I do not believe that city leaders are trying to go beyond their authority but are genuinely concerned about the welfare of the community. Yet, something within me wants to don a disguise and throw all of the masks into the Boston Harbor!
But, I realize that God is working in many ways through all of this, and one thing I can be sure of is that He is working and shaping me into the image of Christ for His glory. That realization has brought back into focus the ultimate purpose for which I, and every other person, exist: To bring glory to God!
As I search my heart in regard to my initial reactions, I discover they are self-focused, with little interest in the glory of Christ. I must ask myself the question, "How can I best bring glory to my Master in this situation?" (1Cor. 10:31). If I cannot keep my priority His glory through this minor issue, how will I remain Christ-focused when real persecution and hardship comes?
So, therefore, I am resolved to not be distracted by these "inconveniences." I will wear my mask joyfully, for the glory of Christ! I will be reminded by each hot breath that, "...He Himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything" (Acts 17:25). And my mask will be a constant reminder to me that, "I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me" (Gal. 2:20).
